More Sleep, Less Beer
Two posts in a day, what is this?
So I talked about needing to deload on my squats and how I wasn’t upset about that. What I am upset about is deloading on my overhead press.
On Friday, I almost got all of my reps in. Four, five, five, five, and then three. So in my mind, by all rights I should have had that thing in the bag yesterday.
Man, do sleep and nutrition really matter for your lifts.
I’m attributing my failure on OHP to two things. The first is that for whatever reason, I barely got any sleep on Friday night. I really, really hate those nights where you just lie in your bed staring at the ceiling until 0430, and this was one of them. Your body needs rest in order to repair and built muscle and I just didn’t give it much of it. Combine that with some heavy sparring practice at 0800 Saturday morning and my body was really in need of a break come Sunday.
The second thing I’m attributing to doing worse on Sunday than on Friday is that on Saturday I didn’t have time to eat very much, and that night I was playing D&D with some friends (that’s right, you found the blog for nerd lifters) and had about four Guinnesses. Between the lack of calories and the catabolic nature of alcohol, that’s bound to have had some negative effect on my lifts.
The second issue I can do something about, the first not so much. Have I learned my lesson? Sure – nutrition is key. Am I going to stop drinking? Probably not. Beer just tastes too good. I am going to try to not have such low and poor calorie days, though.
